I Have a Sentient AI

But you wouldn’t know them, they go to a different data centre. This is essentially the message Anthropic and OpenAI are sending out as the consumers are fed AI slop. But it is necessary to keep the hype alive and to justify the hundreds of billions of dollars of investment into GPUs, data centres and talent.

In recent weeks, many have pointed out the cyclic investment that is taking place as Nvidia invests in the AI companies and infrastructure who need that investment to buy the Nvidia GPUs (see image above). The bet they’re all making is that AI achieves “super intelligence” leading to trillions of dollars in returns.

The main challenge that is faced is that the underlying technology is too immature to allow for super intelligence, specifically:

1.       The models use language to reason not logic to reason

2.       Their short-term memory is retrofit as an afterthought

3.       The GPUs are made for “graphical” processing

4.       The energy supplying the data centres supply 1/10th of what AI stacks require

So, the race is on to overcome these challenges and achieve super intelligence before investors lose confidence.

The good news is, the technology is progressing. Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell architecture and DGX platforms are shaping up to be a lot closer to what current AI models need to train and serve efficiently. Further, model publications such as “Baby Dragon Hatchling”, “Self-Adaptive Language models”, and “Recursive Language Models” are popping up to offer potential new avenues for exploration.

In the meantime, there is a category of AI company that understands the strengths and weaknesses of current AI technology. They are applying them in targeted ways to compliment current workflows. Real value is already being generated here. However, the returns are only on the order of billions not trillions.

Where it’s all heading, is still too early to tell. My advice is to act on what is already tangible and working. When harnessed correctly, AI is already a big value add. Any further advancements is a bonus.
